How photo calorie counting works
Open Eat, tap the camera and snap your plate. Shredify detects each food, matches it to a food database entry and estimates the portion. You see the breakdown (calories, protein, carbs, fat) item by item, fix anything it got wrong, and save. The whole flow takes a few seconds, which is the point: the meals you skip logging are the ones that stall a cut.
How accurate is it?
Honestly: it is an estimate. Independent tests of photo calorie apps in 2026 put typical errors somewhere around 5 to 20 percent, and every photo app struggles with the same things: hidden oil and butter, sauces, mixed dishes and portions stacked out of view. Shredify shows you the portion it assumed so you can correct it, and for anything with a label the barcode scanner gives you the exact numbers. Used daily, a fast estimate you actually log beats a perfect log you abandon by week two.
Why log food in the same app as your training
Calories and protein only matter relative to a goal. In Shredify, your food log sits next to your lifting plan, weigh-ins and the current seasonal arc (a cut, a lean bulk or a recomp), so your targets, streak and progress all read from one place instead of two subscriptions that never talk to each other.
When to use photo vs barcode vs search
Photo: restaurant meals, home cooking and anything without a label. Barcode: packaged food, protein bars, shakes. Search: quick single foods (an apple, 200 g of chicken breast). Recent and favorite foods make repeat meals one tap.
How to do it in Shredify
- Open Eat. Tap Eat in Shredify and choose the camera.
- Snap your meal. Take one clear, top-down photo of the plate.
- Check the estimate. Review each detected food and adjust the portion if needed.
- Save. Calories and macros are added to today and count toward your targets.
Questions
Is the AI photo scan free?
Photo scanning is part of Shredify Pro ($19.99 a month or $99.99 a year on the web). Barcode scanning and food search are included in Base.
Can it see oil, butter or sauce?
Not reliably. No photo app can. Add cooking oil or sauces as a separate item, or correct the estimate before saving.
Does it track macros or just calories?
Both. Every scan estimates calories, protein, carbs and fat.
What phones does it work on?
Shredify runs as a web app at app.getshredify.com on any modern phone and installs to the home screen. Android is in Google Play testing and the iPhone app is in App Store review.
Shredify gives general fitness information, not medical advice. Photo calorie numbers are estimates.
